The Contortionist tells the story of Señor Chao, the most important man in his town, who is about to rest before an important event—the next day, his photograph will be taken so that he may be remembered forever. However, his peaceful sleep is disrupted by an unbearable mosquito that he desperately tries to chase away. In his struggle, he unknowingly adopts a rather peculiar posture.

The book is inspired by a Cupisnique-style ceremonial bottle (1200–200 BC), which depicts a man bending his legs over his back, touching his head with his feet.
